Living near downtown Dahlonega means the Public Square is part of the daily routine. Here is what that looks like from public sources, for someone who likes a morning cinnamon roll, followed by homes for sale featured by Gold Peach Realty.
The town
Dahlonega is the county seat of Lumpkin County, in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains about 70 miles north of Atlanta, per the City of Dahlonega. It was incorporated on December 21, 1833. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates the city’s population at 7,918 and Lumpkin County’s at 36,178, both as of July 1, 2025.
In the middle of the Square is the Dahlonega Gold Museum, in the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse. A few blocks away, the University of North Georgia began in 1873 as North Georgia Agricultural College, on the old U.S. Mint property; its Price Memorial Hall, with the gold-covered bell tower, stands where the Mint once stood.
A morning near the Square
Foothill Grill bakes cinnamon rolls every morning and opens at 7 a.m. seven days a week, a short drive out on Morrison Moore Parkway. On the Square, the Picnic Cafe and Dessertery lists 7 a.m. opening on its own site, with homemade muffins, scones and pastries. Dahlonega General Store opens at 10 a.m. and roasts its peanuts daily. Of the 13 bakeries and sweets places that publish exact hours, 11 list Monday hours and 12 list Sunday hours, as checked Oct 19, 2026, so the week does not shut down on a Monday. See the hours table.
