Short answer: as of October 19, 2026 we could confirm 16 bakeries and sweets places in Dahlonega and Lumpkin County. Eight are on or by the Public Square around the Gold Museum, four are a short drive out, and four take orders ahead or sold at the 2026 farmers market. That is our own count, checked at each business’s own website or menu, not a number copied from a directory.
What Dahlonega’s sweets scene actually looks like
Dahlonega does not have a street of bakeries. It has one dessert cafe on the Square, the Picnic Cafe and Dessertery, which began in 2001 as The Dahlonega Dessertery (Picnic Cafe). Around it are two fudge kitchens, Kilwins Dahlonega and The Dahlonega Fudge Factory, and a chocolatier, Paul Thomas Chocolates. Dahlonega General Store stocks old-fashioned candy and roasts peanuts daily (Dahlonega General Store).
Ice cream comes from three counters: Kilwins, Connie’s Ice Cream & Sandwich Shop by the Square, and the DQ Grill & Chill out on South Chestatee Street. Two sit-down restaurants have dessert menus of their own: The Smith House includes dessert in its family-style price, and Bourbon Street Grille lists beignets and bread pudding. For a morning bake, Foothill Grill sells fresh cinnamon rolls every morning, and Blue Bench Garden sells bread, cakes and cookies from its farm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Custom cakes come from by-appointment and home bakers: Nonni’s Bakery and Sherry’s Sweets-n-Eats. The 2026 Dahlonega Farmers Market added home bakers such as Whisked Bakery and L & R Feathered Goats.
What we could not find: a standalone donut shop, or a gelato, frozen custard or frozen yogurt shop. The one donut chain mapped in town could not be confirmed at its own store locator (see the last section). For beignets, see restaurant desserts.

How we check
- Own site first. Hours, addresses and menu items come from each business’s own website, menu or ordering page. A directory listing (the Dahlonega DDA, the Visitors Bureau) is only a second source.
- Quotes, not paraphrase. Each place record keeps a short quote, machine-checked against the page we read.
- Dates on everything. Every place was checked on October 19, 2026.
- Conflicts are named. When a business’s own page and a directory disagree, we use the business’s own page and say so.
An own site can still be out of date. The Picnic Cafe’s website (copyright 2018) prints “30 Public Square N” and “7am-6:30pm everyday”, while the Dahlonega DDA directory and OpenStreetMap put it on Public Square South and the DDA lists longer day-by-day hours. We show South as the address and the cafe’s own hours, and we suggest calling ahead. Other conflicts: directories still show an older Kilwins phone; the DDA leaves out Bourbon Street Grille’s Thursday hours; and DDA hours differ from the own sites of Bear Necessities, Paul Thomas, Connie’s and the Fudge Factory.
Closed, moved or not confirmed
These names turn up in searches, but we could not confirm them as operating, so we do not recommend them. We also leave out shops whose own sites name no sweets, and names seen only on aggregator sites.
- Baked on Main: it appears only in map and aggregator listings at 270 E Main St; we found no website or social page, and the DDA directory now lists Chef Paco’s at that address.
- Jamie Bakes: its only own page is on Facebook, which we could not read, so we could not confirm its 2026 activity, area served or offerings.
- Dunkin’: OpenStreetMap maps it at 25 Morrison Moore Parkway, but Dunkin’s Dahlonega locator page showed no store details when we checked.
- Crown + Bear: the Visitors Bureau listed it as a 2026 Chocolate Crawl participant, but its own website returned a 404 on October 19, 2026, so its hours and sweets could not be confirmed.

Not confirmed: a bakery by this name appears only in map/aggregator listings at 270 E Main St; we found no website or social page for it, and the DDA directory now lists Chef Paco's restaurant at 270 E Main Street.

Is there a bakery on the Dahlonega square?
Yes. The Picnic Cafe and Dessertery is on the Public Square and began in 2001 as The Dahlonega Dessertery; it serves breakfast and lunch plus homemade muffins, scones, pastries, whole cakes and whole pies.

Is the Picnic Cafe on Public Square North or South?
